CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

The snick of the latch barely made a sound as the door closed behind Slate and Emmy who were the last of the party stragglers to leave. While still in the foyer, T secured the lock and reset the alarm panel to the left of the door, then blindly turning, he startled seeing Antonia right at his back.

“Well, hello there, Dahl.” T playfully purred, looking down at the beautiful raven-haired beauty. He expected nothing but enjoyed the new playful banter that had bloomed between them, flirtatious in manner, though it held no intent.

At least that was what he naively convinced himself.

Glancing overhead into the living room, he watched as Sophia played in her playpen amidst a few toys, and his intent was to head in their daughter’s direction. But plans had unexpectedly changed when Antonia wrapped her arms around his neck and stood on tiptoe to raise her lips to his, and his purr turned into a hungry growl.

“Mr. Kingston,” she addressed him, bringing her soft mouth to his tender lips, so close but never touching, though her breathy words whispered across his own.

How badly he wanted to hear that laugh for the rest of his life. And with prophetic discernment of tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that, and the—week, month, year after that. If they could work this “marriage of convenience” into an actual marriage, he’d get just that, her lilt and laughter at his side for a blessed eternity.

“Come with me,” he said, one hand on the door handle and the other guiding her beside him.

Without question, but in great wonderment and amusement, she blindly followed him through the open doorway and into the untenanted hallway.

“Steven, Sophia is inside alone…what are you—”

Amused by her piping shrill when he scooped her into his arms—one beneath her knees and the other supporting her back—he savored her touch when she clung tightly to him, nails fisted into his tee with nothing but trust in her eyes that he’d hold her, protected safely and securely in his arms.

“I’m not one for superstition, you can ask the guys, but I am a sucker for tradition,” he answered. “Coming home earlier, with your hands full, and with Sophia in my arms, along with the trail of our friends behind us, I suspected it was a bad time to do this.” Laying a gentle kiss onto her parted lips, and with his
